A meal that isn’t “chopped liver”
Il y a des gens qui ne mangent pas le matin, juste un kawa et c’est parti.
Some people don't eat in the morning, just a cup of coffee and off you go.
Avant, je buvais aussi du café. Alors, je mettais la cafetière en marche.
I used to drink coffee too. So I'd turn the coffee pot on.
Mais bon c’est fini. Aujourd’hui, j'allume la bouilloire pour faire bouillir de l'eau pour le thé.
But no more. Today, I'm putting the kettle on to boil water for tea.
Et ce que j'aime plus que tout, c’est me faire des œufs brouillés.
And what I love most of all is to make scrambled eggs.
Ah, quand j’étais petit, mon grand-père me faisait griller du pain, enfin, de la baguette.
When I was a kid, my grandfather used to toast me bread - well, baguette.
Ces tartines grillées étaient recouvertes de beurre et de confiture.
These toasted slices of bread were topped with butter and jam.
Et, je les trempais dans le chocolat au lait.
And I used to dip them in milk chocolate.
L’odeur de la baguette dans le grille-pain, quel bonheur !
The smell of baguette in the toaster, what a delight!
Mais je rêvasse et il se fait tard, alors j'engloutis mon petit-déj.
But I'm daydreaming and it's getting late, so I scarf down my breakfast.
Je débarrasse la table et mets la vaisselle sale dans l'évier.
I clear the table and put the dirty dishes in the sink.
Le p’tit-déj pour moi, c’est primordial pour bien commencer la journée.
For me, breakfast is essential for a good start to the day.
Ouais, le petit déjeuner, ça ne compte pas pour du beurre.

Compter pour du beurre : When something has no value, we sometimes say that it 'counts for butter'. This expression came into use in the 19th century, but has its origins are ancient. The Greeks and Romans considered butter to be used by the poor people. In fact, they used it very little in cooking, instead using it as a leather polish, a cosmetic to make hair shine, or even as a medicine to soothe burns. Available all year round, basic butter was greatly depreciated in comparison with olive oil, a noble product that was only produced once a year. This situation lasted until the end of the Middle Ages.

Au matin, je bois beaucoup d'eau e je prend du thé avec des biscuits ou une brioche. Quand je peux pas déjeuner, je mange des œufs avec des légumes et du pain.
