Margaret et Roxy en balade à Paris.

Question bizarre, hein ? 🤔 Je te demande ça parce que c’est exactement ce qui est arrivé à Margaret (ma copine américaine) et à Roxy, son chat. Oui, oui, son chat avait des rêves de France plein la tête. Roxy a même passé des heures à pratiquer son français avec Margaret. C’était sa première et plus fidèle partenaire linguistique et franchement, elle n’était pas si mauvaise pour un chat.

Strange question, isn't it? I'm asking because that's exactly what happened to Margaret (my American girlfriend) and Roxy, her cat. Yes, yes, her cat was full of dreams of France (in her head). Roxy even spent hours practising her French with Margaret. She was her first and most loyal language partner and frankly, she wasn't too bad for a cat.

Alors, quand Margaret a fait ses valises pour déménager en France il y a plus d’un an, il était évident que Roxy finirait par la rejoindre. Elles sont inséparables. Mais bon, si tu penses que faire traverser l’Atlantique à un chat, c’est simple comme bonjour, tu te mets le doigt dans l'œil ☝️👀 (= tu te trompes). Voici comment Margaret s’y est prise pour faire venir son chat des Etats-Unis. Accroche-toi, c’est tout une aventure.

So when Margaret packed her bags to move to France over a year ago, it was obvious that Roxy would end up joining her. They're inseparable. But if you think taking a cat across the Atlantic is a piece of cake, you stick your finger in your eye (= you’re wrong / you're barking up the wrong tree). Here's how Margaret managed to bring her cat over from the United States. Hang on, it's quite an adventure.

Un chat avec des rêves de France plein la tête.

Avant que Roxy ne puisse poser une patte en France, il a fallu lui mettre une puce. Tu sais, la puce c’est ce petit truc électronique pour identifier ton animal de compagnie. Et surtout, il a fallu remplir une montagne de paperasses ⛰️📄, la paperasse c’est les papiers administratifs comme les certificats, les tampons officiels, les vaccins… Et quand je dis une montagne de paperasse, j’exagère pas…

Before Roxy could set paw in France, we had to put a chip in her (= she had to be microchipped). You know, a chip is that little electronic thing that identifies your pet. And above all, we had to fill out a mountain of paperwork, paperwork meaning administrative paperwork such as certificates, official stamps, vaccinations... And when I say a mountain of paperwork, I'm not exaggerating...

La maman de Margaret, qui s’est occupée de tout ça au Texas, a bien mérité une médaille. Elle a dû courir chez le véto pour les vaccins et les certificats, tout en gardant un œil sur les délais. Tout s’est joué à un cheveu. Par miracle, les papiers sont arrivés juste à temps, et tout le monde a poussé un grand ouf de soulagement😮‍💨. Et puis, il y a eu le voyage en avion.

Margaret's mum, who took care of all this in Texas, deserved a medal. She had to run to the vet for the vaccinations and certificates, while keeping an eye on the deadlines. It all came down to a hair's breadth. Miraculously, the papers arrived just in time, and everyone breathed a huge sigh of relief. And then there was the plane trip.

Après une petite inspection de la chambre d'hôtel, Roxy a trouvé ses marques.

Imagine un peu : un chat qui traverse l’Atlantique depuis le Texas. Roxy, qui est un peu diva sur les bords, n’était pas hyper fan de l’idée. Mais elle s’est accrochée, sans doute motivée par l’idée de revoir Margaret, qui l’attendait à Paris avec les bras grands ouverts. Et Margaret n’a pas fait les choses à moitié, elle a déroulé le tapis rouge : hôtel quatre étoiles ✨🏨 et tout le tralala (= tout le luxe, le cérémonial). Pour leur première nuit ensemble en France, Roxy a été reçue comme une reine.

Just imagine: a cat crossing the Atlantic from Texas. Roxy, who's a bit of a diva around the edges, wasn't too keen on the idea. But she stuck with it, no doubt motivated by the idea of seeing Margaret again, who was waiting for her in Paris with arms wide open. And Margaret didn't do things by halfway, rolling out the red carpet: four-star hotel and the whole shebang. For their first night together in France, Roxy was received like a queen.

Mais l’aventure ne s’arrête pas là. Dès leur arrivée, Roxy a dû faire un détour chez le véto. Alors là, autant te dire qu’elle n’était pas d’humeur 😾. Imagine la scène : elle a soufflé, craché, et fait comprendre que ce n’était pas du tout son idée d’un bon moment en France. On se serait cru dans les Misérables 🎭. Malgré tout, le vétérinaire a réussi à l’examiner et a confirmé qu’elle était en pleine forme. Elle avait le droit de rester en France et de demander son passeport européen. Rien que ça !

But the adventure didn't end there. As soon as they arrived, Roxy had to make a detour to the vet. So I might as well tell you that she wasn't in the mood. Imagine the scene: she huffed, she puffed and she made it clear that this was not her idea of a good time in France. It was like being in Les Misérables. In spite of everything, the vet managed to examine her and confirmed that she was in great shape. She had the right to stay in France and to apply for her European passport. Nothing less!

Un passeport européen, ça mérite bien une petite célébration.

Quand on pense qu’à cette époque Margaret galérait encore à avoir son premier visa. Il a suffi seulement d’une semaine à Roxy pour obtenir son passeport européen tout neuf. Quelle injustice ! Mais bon soyons honnêtes – avec son caractère et ses adorables moustaches, Roxy l’a bien mérité.

At the time, Margaret was still struggling to get her first visa. It only took Roxy a week to get her brand-new European passport. What an injustice! But let's be honest - with her character and adorable moustache, Roxy deserved it.

Voilà comment Roxy a accompli son rêve de devenir expat en France. Maintenant, tu es prévenu, si tu envisages d'emmener en France ton propre compagnon à quatre pattes 🐕‍🦺, prépare-toi à une bonne dose de paperasse, un long voyage et peut-être un petit séjour dans un hôtel chic pour compenser. Et surtout, n’oublie pas de donner des cours de langue à ton animal à l’avance. Ça a bien marché pour Roxy, après tout. 😉

This is how Roxy fulfilled her dream of becoming an expat in France. Now you've been warned: if you're thinking of bringing your own four-legged friend to France, be prepared for a lot of paperwork, a long trip and maybe a little stay in a chic hotel to compensate. And don't forget to give your pet language lessons in advance. It worked out well for Roxy, after all.
